Children who are often hospitalized in intensive care units are more likely to have attention deficit disorders later, and new research finds a possible culprit: a high level of plastic-softening chemicals called phthalates circulating in the blood. The researchers, who will present their study results Friday at The Endocrine Society’s 98th annual meeting in Boston, suggest these chemicals, which are added to indwelling medical devices such as plastic tubes and catheters, seep into the child’s bloodstream.
“Phthalates have been banned from children’s toys because of their potential toxic and hormone-disrupting effects, but they are still used to soften medical devices,” said lead researcher Sören Verstraete, MD, a PhD student at KU (Katholieke Universiteit) Leuven in Leuven, Belgium. “We found a clear match between previously hospitalized children’s long-term neurocognitive test results and their individual exposure to the phthalate DEHP during intensive care.”
Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, or DEHP, is the most commonly used plastic softener in medical devices made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Verstraete called the use of medical devices containing this phthalate “potentially harmful” for the brain development and function of critically ill children.
“Development of alternative plastic softeners for use in indwelling medical devices may be urgently indicated,” he said.
Their study included 100 healthy children and 449 children who received treatment in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and underwent neurocognitive testing four years later. Most of the PICU patients were recovering from heart surgery, but some had sustained accidental injuries or had severe infections. The researchers measured blood levels of DEHP metabolites, or byproducts. Initially they performed the blood tests in the healthy children and 228 of the patients while they were in the PICU. Patients had one to 12 medical tubes in the PICU and ranged in age from newborn to 16 years.
The investigators found that DEHP metabolite levels were not detectable in the blood samples of healthy children. However, at admission to the PICU, the critically ill children, already connected to catheters, had levels that Verstraete called “sky-high.” Although the DEHP levels decreased rapidly, they remained 18 times higher until discharge from the PICU compared with those of healthy children, he said.
Then the researchers conducted statistical analyses that adjusted for the patients’ initial risk factors that could influence the neurocognitive outcome as well as length of stay, complications and treatments in the PICU. A high exposure to DEHP during the PICU stay, according to Verstraete, was strongly associated with attention deficit found at neurocognitive testing four years after discharge. They validated this finding in a different group of 221 PICU patients.
“This phthalate exposure explained half of the attention deficit in former PICU patients,” he said, adding that other factors may account for the other half.

The research received funding from the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO) in Brussels; Methusalem program from the Flemish government in Belgium; European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development; and Institute for the Promotion of Innovation by Science and Technology in Flanders (IWT), Brussels. This study appeared in the March issue of the journal Intensive Care Medicine.

In our ongoing effort to reduce and remove toxic chemicals from our homes and environment, here are four more “Do This, Not That” tips.
The struggle to reduce toxic chemicals in our homes is never-ending, but armed with simple tips and a desire to improve our lives and our health, we can make a difference.
A Very Handy Tool
Conventional spray cleaners are a slurry of toxic chemicals, chemicals never tested for safety in humans—chemicals you end up touching and breathing.
And the results aren’t pretty. Phthalates, triclosan, QUATs, 2-butoxyethanol, synthetic petroleum-based fragrances . . . these and many more are increasingly being linked to a laundry list of diseases—allergies, asthma, cancer, reproductive disorders, hormone disruption, metabolic syndrome, organ damage and neurotoxicity, among others. No single chemical is the sole culprit; it’s the collective, cumulative effect of this mix of toxins that results in unpredictable health consequences.
What To Do: The Norwex Dusting Mitt is all you need to dust your entire home, without harsh chemicals. Dust furniture, windows, blinds, fireplace mantles, counters and more, quickly and easily, with your Dusting Mitt.
Why Choose Norwex: The magic’s in the microfiber! How? The ultra-soft and fine microfiber is woven into a higher pile for a more powerful static charge to attract and hold dust and dirt. in And the open spaces in the mitt’s ultra-fine fibers allow it to hold much more. And since you’re not using harsh chemicals or waxes, you also get a longer-lasting clean. Much better than expensive sprays and plain cotton cloths that merely smear the dust and dirt around while depositing a fresh layer of toxic goo on everything.
Softer on You and the Environment
As with spray cleaners, fabric softeners and dryer sheets also contain man-made toxins and chemicals such as formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. Yes, we all want soft clothes, but at what cost to our family’s health and our environment?
What To Do: The Norwex Fluff and TumbleDryer Balls naturally soften fabric, reduce static and cut drying time as well, all without adding any harsh, toxic chemicals to your clothes, bedding or other items that come into contact with your skin!
Why Choose Norwex: Made of 100% New Zealand wool, the hand-spun balls tumble gently through the laundry, reducing drying time as they naturally flex the fibers in your clothes, giving them a softer feel with less static and fewer wrinkles.
Gain The Upper Hand
Conventional hand cleaners may seem safe but, here again, they typically contain numerous industrial solvents and other questionable chemicals.
What To Do: Instead of harmful, irritating cleaners, try our natural Peppermint Foaming Hand Wash. Non-irritating and non-toxic, it not only cleans hands without chemicals, it also leaves them feeling moisturized and smooth.
Why Norwex Is Better: Our Peppermint Foaming Hand Washcontains no SLS, SLES, triclosan, parabens, synthetic dyes or fragrances, phthalates, PEGs, petroleum-derived ingredients or gluten. Instead, Peppermint, Coconut and Apple extracts combine with Panthenol, Allantoin and Aloe to give your hands a natural clean.
The Last Straw
Did you know that about 500 million plastic straws are used every day? Or that these plastic straws contain numerous harmful, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, toxins that can make their way down into the water table and wreak havoc on nature? What’s worse, plastic straws are one of the top 10 debris items ingested by sea life.
What To Do: Our Stainless Steel Drinking Straws do the trick without any environmental shocks.
Why Choose Norwex: Our set of four drinking straws are made from eco-friendly stainless steel. They’re very durable and reusable and large enough to handle shakes and smoothies, too. Best of all, our Stainless Steel Drinking Straws mean less waste and fewer toxins in your body.
Chemicals come in all types of pretty packages, but the results are often not so desirable. With Norwex by your side, you can make sure your home is a safe haven, one radically free of the countless toxic chemicals that burden our lives and our environment. Check back here often for more tips on how to make your home a safer haven.

You’re tired. You’re busy. You’re watching the kids. You’re on the road, and unfamiliar with the area. We hear you, and we know what you’re thinking: Skipping just one workout can’t hurt, can it? Unfortunately, it can: Missing even a single workout can initiate a downward spiral, increasing the likelihood that you’ll skip another one by 61 percent, according to British researchers.
So what’s a successful, time-crunched, modern day road-warrior like yourself to do? Exercise anyway. Even if you’ve skipped a whole month (or two) of workouts, you can regain most of what you lost in as little as 6 weeks, according to a study by Swedish researchers. Follow the tips below to bust five of the most common excuses and get your workouts back on track.
Excuse: You’re too tired at the end of the day.
The Fix: First, fuel up smarter in the afternoon. Swap out your high-carb, energy-spiking granola bar or yogurt snack for an energy-sustaining protein shake, or a handful of nuts or sesame seeds. Next, enlist some social support. “Find a fun, motivating group fitness class, or a workout buddy with the same qualities,” says Rachel Vaziralli, M.S., a master trainer at Equinox Fitness in New York. Science agrees: Exercising with a new workout partner can make it easer to stick a workout schedule, according to a recent study by Swiss researchers.
Excuse: You don’t have an hour to work out. Ever.
The Fix: Who says your workout has to take an hour—or even 30 minutes? Less than 10 minutes of high intensity interval training (HIIT) performed within a workout lasting less than 30 minutes can improve aerobic capacity and exercise tolerance (i.e., stamina) in just a few weeks, according to a recent study at McMaster University. Now imagine how fit you can get if every minute in your workout revolved around HIIT? Stop wondering and start benefiting by signing up for Beachbody On Demand.
Excuse: The workout seems too hard.
The Fix: Now’s the time to listen to your body. You should feel energized after your workout, not defeated. “When you push and you’re not ready for it, you end up not performing the exercises properly, making them less effective and increasing your risk of injury,” says Vaziralli. Dial back the difficulty on your current workout by lowering the weight, reducing reps, or increasing the rest between sets. Many exercises can also be modified (e.g., elevating your hands on a box during pushup, or doing a quarter squat instead of a full squat), allowing you to work the same muscles without compromising your form.
Excuse: You don’t know the area.
The Fix: If you’re on the road in an unfamiliar city and want to break free of the gym, see if your hotel has an in-house fitness concierge. Westin hotels, for example, will not only hook you up with workout clothes and a fresh pair of running shoes for just $5, but will also take you on a group run if you’re interested. Rather head out on your own? Search MapMyRun,RunKeeper, and USA Track and Field for local, user-rated running routes.
Excuse: You can’t exercise and watch your kids at the same time.
The Fix: If your kids are young enough to require constant supervision (and you have a supportive spouse), you’ll likely need to transition to AM workouts while the little ones are asleep. “It’s going to be a grind the first couple days, but once you adjust, your body will be primed for morning workouts,” says Dr. John Rusin, D.P.T., C.S.C.S., owner of John Rusin Fitness Systems and the father of two young children. Older kids might allow you to carve out some exercise time in another room, but you’ll still need to be home. That’s where streaming services (like Beachbody On Demand) can be a lifesaver.
These are super yummy!
If you’re looking for a healthy breakfast that’s both high in protein and rich in complex carbs, we’ve got it. These super easy-to-make Sweet Potato Egg Cups combine the two and essentially creates a mini frittata! Plus, since you get two per serving, and there’s 12 egg muffins…that gives you six days worth of grab-and-go breakfasts. Or, you can freeze them and reheat them when you want them!
But, there’s something extra special in these egg muffins that helps them stand out from the rest of the egg cup pack. The shredded sweet potatoes taste like hash browns! Once you grate or shred the sweet potatoes using a standard kitchen grater or use the grater attachment for your food processor attachment, give the sweet potatoes a few squeezes with a paper towel to absorb any excess moisture. Then, press them into a muffin pan, filling the cups about a third of the way. Don’t overfill them, or there won’t be room for your eggs. You’ll see in the video below that we used a disher (also known as an ice cream scoop) to divide the sweet potatoes evenly between muffin cups. Bake them for about 15 minutes at 375° F so the hash browns can get golden brown and crispy.
While the sweet potato hash browns bake, scramble a dozen eggs and sauté broccoli and onion. Combine these and then, spoon or ladle the egg mixture on top of the baked sweet potatoes. Fill them all the way to the top. Place a baking sheet under the muffin pan as they bake to catch any egg mixture that might bubble out.
We used onion and chopped broccoli florets in this recipe, but you can substitute with the same amount of your favorite vegetables, like bell peppers, mushrooms, and asparagus, or try scallions or shallots instead of onion. They can be kept in the refrigerator for a few days, and freeze well if you plan to keep them longer. Simply reheat in a microwave or toaster oven.
Watch our video to see how it’s done!

With the Norwex Microfiber system, you will not breathe, touch or ingest chemicals – you simply create a cleaner, healthier indoor environment.
What is it?
At only 1/200th the size of a strand of human hair, Norwex Microfiber is one of the most innovative products in the cleaning industry today. When combined with the unique Norwex knitting process, Norwex Microfiber becomes a highly effective cleaning agent and can hold up to seven times its weight in matter. Unlike cotton cloths that will simply spread the dirt, grease and other particles around, Norwex BacLock® * Microfiber lifts these particles up into the cloth and away from the surface. Once inside the cloth, the Norwex micro silver in the cloth goes to work with self-purification properties against mold, fungi and bacterial odor within 24 hours, so that it is ready to use again.
How to use it:
Work with eight clean sides
Use it Wet to Clean
Dampen your cloth with water to loosen dirt and debris, leaving surface free from everything. Used wet, the microfibers work together to provide superior cleaning results. Simply wet the cloth, wring, and wipe away dirt and debris from all washable surfaces. For spot cleaning use the Norwex Spray Bottle to apply water to the surface before cleaning.
Use it Dry for Dusting
Use dry to pick up and hold dust. Used dry, the Norwex Microfiber produces an electrostatic charge that attracts and holds dust particles. The electrostatic effect created enhances the cloths’ ability to attract dirt and dust particles. As you lightly wipe the surface the microfiber attracts and draws up even the smallest particles of dust, trapping them in the fibers until the cloths are rinsed or laundered.
How to take care of it:
At Norwex we are proud of our unique, high quality microfiber and want you to be as thrilled as we are with the product. We are happy to assist you with any item that did not meet your expectations. Our two-year microfiber warranty covers any problem you may encounter outside of normal wear and tear. If you are not pleased with how a microfiber product has worn or performed you may contact your Consultant to have the item replaced, at no additional charge, through Norwex Customer Service Returns.
Products with BacLock®
This graphic is noted throughout the catalog to differentiate those products that contain an antibacterial agent for self-cleansing purposes only. The agent is solely designed to inhibit bacterial odor, mold and/or mildew growth within the product.
