Help others by helping yourself!

DO WHAT YOU LOVE

summer health

What does it mean to be a Team Beachbody Coach? It means earning an income while you help yourself and others live healthier, more fulfilling lives. It’s being passionate about helping to end the trend of obesity in this country. All by doing what you love—staying fit and healthy, while inspiring others to do the same.

The inspiration doesn’t stop at helping others: you can become a leader – but you are also lead by your team.  You are held accountable when you hold your team accountable.  If you have trouble staying on task – what better way to stay the course than to have others look to you for motivation and encouragement?  I don’t have time to work out every day. I don’t always eat right. But, by helping others get started on their path to a healthier life, I keep myself going.  I can relate. I can empathize.  I can sympathize. I can help others get through their challenges AS I get through mine.  We do this together.  I rely on my team as much as they rely on me.  When I see someone struggle – or fall off track – or give up, I help them get started again.  And, with that, I also start over. I am encouraged by my team’s success…and I am motivated by my team’s failures.

Whether you’re already a “product of the product”—someone who’s found success through one of our world-class fitness solutions or products—or whether you were inspired by watching a friend or family member transform their lives the same way, becoming a Coach will reward you in ways you never thought possible—physically, personally, and financially.

Think you’re up for the challenge? Click below and start creating change—in your life and in the lives of others—today. You can be part of something so big, it’s changing the world, one healthy decision at a time. How cool does that sound?

Are you sabotaging your workouts?

Are You Sabotaging Your Workouts?

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been working out for a week or a decade—odds are you’re making a handful of common mistakes that are holding you back. We’re also willing to bet that most of them aren’t your fault—gyms, exercise communities, and even some popular fitness programs are rife with well-intended advice that’s rooted more in bro-science than real-world research. That ends today. Purge the following mistakes from your training program to accelerate your gains and squeeze out of every rep.

Mistake #1: You stick to a routine
The rapid gains you enjoy at the beginning of a training program will eventually taper if you keep doing the same workouts month after month (or year after year). “The body adapts to new stresses quickly,” says Yunus Barisik, C.S.C.S., author of the blog Next Level Athletics. Your job—and the goal of any good exercise plan—is to make sure that adaptation (also known as muscle growth) never stops. “And the way to do that is by regularly varying what you do,” says Barisik.
The fix: If you’re a beginner, mix things up every two to three months. If you’re a veteran, you’ll need to do so even sooner. “Those changes don’t have to be major,” says Barisik. Occasionally swapping new exercises into your workouts (or trying a completely new workout program) is a smart idea. “But even minor tweaks—changing your grip, lifting pace, foot position, or rest periods—can lead to big gains by not only working muscles you normally miss, but also working the muscles you normally target in new ways,” says Barisk.

Mistake #2: You forget about your back
In their pursuit of head turning muscle, many people focus only on those they can see in the mirror—pecs, shoulders, arms, and abs. “And that’s a problem,” says Barisik. “Overemphasizing the front side of your body can lead to muscular imbalances, a hunched posture, and an increased risk of injury.” Since most people are already “anterior dominant”—meaning they more frequently use the muscles on the front of their bodies—such one-sided training often worsens existing postural and performance issues.
The fix: Stop using a mirror to gauge your progress—it’s the muscles you can’t see that you should focus on. To balance your upper body, perform two pulling exercises (chinup, row) for every pushing exercise, such as the overhead press or bench press, says Barisik. To balance your lower body, perform two sets of hamstring-dominant exercises, like the deadlift or kettlebell swing, for every set of a quad-dominant exercise, like the squat or lunge. After a few months (read: once your posture and musculature balance out), you can switch to one-to-one ratios, says Barisik.

Mistake #3: You train too hard (or not hard enough)
More isn’t always better when it comes to building strength and losing fat. “Most people don’t know how to safely push their limits,” says Michael Wood, C.S.C.S., Chief Fitness Officer of Koko FitClub. “You might think you’re working out efficiently, but few people actually optimize their training stimulus.” While you need to challenge your muscles to make them grow, you never want to push them to the point where you inhibit their ability to repair themselves. Why? Because when it comes to muscle, repair equals growth. On the other hand, if you don’t push your muscles hard enough, you won’t trigger growth at all. Your goal: To hit the intensity sweet spot where you maximize results without compromising recovery.
The Fix: If you’re lifting weights, always stop two reps short of in your last set of an exercise. Those reps provide no additional growth stimulus, and might actually slow muscle growth by extending the time needed for recovery. That said, you shouldn’t have more than two reps left in you, as that’s a sign you aren’t pushing hard enough. If you’re doing intervals or circuits, use a heart rate monitor to fine-tune effort and rest. Determine your max HR by multiplying your age by .7 and subtracting that number from 208. During work periods, build up your intensity to 75 to 85 percent of your max, says Wood. During rest periods, let it fall to 65 percent of your max HR before beginning your next round.

Mistake #4: You don’t dial in your diet
You’ve likely heard the adage “You can’t outrun a bad diet.” It’s true, so heed it. If your eating habits aren’t aligned with your fitness goals, you’ll never hit them. “Many active people eat too many carbs—especially simple carbs like sugar—and don’t pay nearly enough attention to fat and protein,” says Bob Seebohar, M.S., R.D., CSSD, C.S.C.S., a sport dietitian and owner and founder of eNRG Performance.
The fix: Step one in upgrading your diet is to reduce your consumption of added sugar (according to the government’s new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, such foods should comprise no more than 10 percent of your diet). Eat at least two servings of fruit and two servings of vegetables a day. “And make sure every meal contains a balance of protein, fat, and fiber,” says Seebohar. “Neglecting these suggestions will yield poor blood sugar control, higher insulin levels, increased fat storage, and decreased fat burning.” Increasing your protein intake is particularly important. In a study by the U.S. Military Nutrition Division, people who ate twice the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of protein—1.6 grams instead of .8 grams per kilogram of bodyweight—preserved more muscle as they lost weight than those who stuck to the RDA. If you weigh 150 pounds, your daily protein quota is 109 grams.

Kick start with the 21 Day Fix

Duane Dodge lost 47 lbs. with 21 Day Fix and the Beachbody Performance supplements. He entered his results into the Beachbody Challenge, and won the $500 Daily Prize for February 18th!
Duane is an independent Beachbody Coach.

Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?

I am a professional firefighter with Halifax Fire, the oldest fire department in Canada. I have been a firefighter for just over 10 years. Over the past few years, I have felt like I was getting out of shape. I needed to do something to get back in shape. I was starting to feel like I wasn’t performing my job at the level I should be. Climbing stairs and ladders, pulling hoses, and wearing 75 pounds of gear were starting to get very hard on me. I knew I needed to change something. The number one killer of firefighters is cardiac events, and I didn’t want to be a statistic. I have a reputation in the fire house as the guy who makes the best gravy! I love to cook, but I cooked all the wrong things. Bigmeals are a part of firehouse life, but I took it to extremes. Cheese-stuffed burgers, giant steaks, onion rings, fries, and loads of gravy were my specialty. I knew I had to make some serious changes, but I didn’t really want to admit I didn’t know how to make the changes. I was in a bad spot.

What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
Well, I knew I had to make some changes in my life. I was 220 pounds and eating whatever I wanted. Basically, I felt invincible: “I’m a firefighter. I’m strong. I may look a bit chunky but I’m not out of shape.” That’s what I was telling myself. I met a lady at a soccer camp my kids were attending in June of 2015, at which time I was 220-plus pounds and had just come back from a cruise vacation. I ate non-stop on vacation, and was feeling so out of shape. The lady I met was a Beachbody Coach. We got to talking about working out, and she mentioned that she had lost a large amount of weight using a Beachbody program. She began to tell me about 21 Day Fix. I also found out later that week that my brother-in-law had just signed up to be a Beachbody Coach, and he was starting 21 Day Fix. I did some research on the program, and as soon as I saw how the program teaches you how and what portion sizes to eat, I knew that’s what I needed to kick-start my fitness journey. I loved the 30-minute intense workouts.

What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
The greatest challenge I face is really my career and the physical demands that are required to be a firefighter. Carrying heavy loads, climbing ladders, and advancing firehose into a burning structure are all tasks I could be called on to do at any time. Just before starting 21 Day Fix, my eating was pretty much off the rails. I would eat whatever I wanted, thinking there wouldn’t be any consequences to my health or fitness. The container idea was such a breakthrough for me. The simple way it’s used to help you eat the right foods and the correct amounts made all the difference. I am a very competitive person, and I needed a challenging workout routine. Autumn’s program is amazing, and I was blown away by how hard it was to do these 60-second exercises. So the 21 Day Fix and Shakeology have transformed my life. I will never go back to the way I was. I have been forever changed, because of this program. Simple eating and a 30-minute workout have been a game-changer.

What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
Right from the start, before I even ordered the program, I knew this was going to work for me. After watching a YouTube promo about 21 Day Fix, I bought it right away. The way that the program teaches you to eat is so simple and easy. Not having to count calories is awesome. If it fits in the container, you can have it. I love having the container tracking app. It takes all the guesswork out of what I have left for containers by the end of the day. The workouts are challenging and very intense. Their 30-minute length is perfect for my lifestyle. This program really did make me create new healthy habits, and started my journey to health and fitness. I will never go back to the way I was.

Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
I achieved amazing results on this program since July 2015. I have done six rounds of 21 Day Fix, and I am down 47 pounds! I went from a size 36 pants that were tight around the waist to a size 31 that are loose. Our nutrition and eating as a family has been completely changed forever. I can actually see abs and have muscle definition for the first time ever! I’m 37, and I’m in the best shape of my life. I’m proud and very confident in my abilities to perform my job as a firefighter now. My strength has increased, and my focus and drive are at an all-time high.

How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
My life and the lives of my wife and kids are forever changed because of this program. My wife has done two rounds of 21 Day Fix, and has lost over 15 pounds. I have lost 47 pounds, and decided to become a Beachbody Coach. I have been able to inspire many others to start their journey to become fit and to have the body they’ve always wanted. I’m a healthier and stronger person since I’ve decided to go on this journey to fitness. I hope to help many others achieve their goals. I’ve learned that fitness is a journey, not a destination, and I get daily motivation from doing the workouts and getting stronger every time. I’m living proof Beachbody and 21 Day Fix work! If you decide and commit, you will succeed.

How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
My Coach inspired me by simply doing the program first before me. After I had seen the progress he was making, I had to do it.

How did a Beachbody supplement, nutritional product, or program (such as Shakeology or Beachbody Ultimate Reset) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, or digestion/regularity?
I used Shakeology during 21 Day Fix. I noticed a huge boost in energy, and I didn’t crave any junk food. The chocolate shakes really hit the spot and got rid of all the chocolate cravings. Shakeology has been a huge part of this journey for me, and I will continue to use Shakeology.
